Anniturvik
Umiujaq
Anniturvik means "a place where they hold it in protection” in Inuktitut and is the landholding corporation for the community of Umiujaq. Anniturvik Landholding Corporation of Umiujaq was established in 2004.
Umiujaq meaning "which resembles a boat” in Inuktitut is located on the shores of Hudson Bay and was established in 1986. The Inuit negotiated a clause into the 1975 James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement that provided for the relocation of the Inuit from Kuujjuarapik to a new settlement unaffected by hydro-electric development. Following a referendum, the new community of Umiujaq was chosen.
